Brittany & Kevin | Minneapolis & St. Paul Winter Engagement Session

Looking to have a winter engagement session?

Brittany and Kevin, for their winter engagement session last December, covered both sides of the Twin Cities.  We started at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis with their more formal outfits. We then moved over to Rice Park in St. Paul for some outdoor shots amidst the holiday lights.  We timed it just right (accidentally on purpose) so that all the lights turned on around Rice Park just as we were starting to photograph there.  Actually, what specifically happened was, before the lights were on, I had posted the couple in the park, asked them to look at me and smile, then look at each other. Then "go in for a kiss" and no joke - the second they kissed all the twinkle lights turned on!  It was pretty magical!  (And also 5pm on the dot, if I recall correctly, but I'll take it!)

Brittany and Kevin's session ran the gamut in look and feel, from the sleek, bold, crisp architecture of the theater all the way to the charming, cozy, historic feel of St. Paul on a winter evening.  The couple really wanted to incorporate Rice Park into their session, and the Guthrie is such a nice indoor spot - plus we got lucky with good weather to be able to do both.

Finding the right location for a winter engagement session.

When hunting for an indoor spot, I'm looking for somewhere with great window light - and lots of it! - and somewhere open to the public (if not at the studio) but not likely to be terribly crowded - a tall order, I know!  This is another reason why doing portrait sessions on weekdays is best.  The Guthrie's yellow room, the Amber Box outside of the Dowling Studio, is sometimes closed for private events, but I always start up there if I can.  What a view of the city, in addition to being a super cool place to shoot!

Brittany and Kevin will celebrate a mid-October wedding this year at the Golden Valley Golf & Country Club - can't wait!
